Student Athletes Contribute to Cancer Fund

The NJ-SP Lady Jays presented a check to SCCF Director of Development Sarah Origer

The North Judson-San Pierre Lady Jays basketball team donated more than $1,000 to the Starke County Community Foundation for its Christina Rotering and Ashley Derrickson Memorial Fund for Starke County Cancer. The fund provides assistance to Starke County individuals battling cancer.

To raise the funds, the boys’ and girls’ NJ-SP High School basketball teams and the cheerleading team sold t-shirts, which stated “Pink Out- North Judson-San Pierre Bluejays take flight against cancer.” They also raffled off pink basketballs signed by the players and coaches.

The shirts and basketballs were sold on December 30th during a double-header. The t-shirts raised more than $400, and the basketballs raised more than $600. The NJ-SP Athletic Department also provided funds to help cover the cost of the t-shirts, allowing a larger amount to be donated from the student athletes.

The Community Foundation is very grateful for the students’ contribution to this fund. Through their donation, the legacies of Christina Rotering and Ashley Derrickson continue to live on, and Starke County residents battling cancer will have some financial relief.
