Starke County Grant Supports Sheriff K9 Program

The Starke County Community Foundation granted a combined total of $7,000 to help fund the Starke County Sheriff K9 Program.

This project helped provide resources for the Sheriff’s Office K9 program that solely relies on donations. This grant was able to help cover the cost of training aids for the explosive K9, training and certification fees, dog food, vet bills, and supplements for one of the K9s since funding is one of their biggest challenges. This partnership, along with the help of others, has created a successful program that includes four active K9s in the Starke community.

This program is a huge asset to Starke County as a whole. When asked about how this program benefits the community, Austin Fletcher, who works for the Starke County Sheriff’s Department stated, “It promotes enforcement to combat the opioid epidemic, locate missing persons, assist in apprehending dangerous fugitives, and community relations such as demonstrations in our schools.” This program is vital to every community member in Starke County since everyone is impacted one way or another.
