24 Jun San Pierre Volunteer Fire Department Receives Grant for Guardian Angels
The San Pierre Volunteer Fire Department received a grant from the Starke County Community Foundation to purchase 18 Guardian Angel safety lights for its firefighters.
These wearable safety lights have been proven to save the lives of emergency responders who respond to different calls, especially calls on high traffic roads. When the Guardian Angel lights are flashing, the emergency responders become 89% more visible and can be seen five times further than just a vest alone.
Tammy Schumacher, a Starke County Community Foundation service committee member and supporter of the fire department, explained, “Emergency responders clip on the light gear and become much more easily detected by an oncoming car. These lights are better than a vest and caution light alone.”
By increasing visibility, the lights help reduce the risk of responders being struck by passing vehicles while working at emergency scenes.
The lights can catch the driver’s attention, and drivers can slow down or move over sooner once they see the light. The lights allow drivers more time to respond and give greater protection to the first responders. The Guardian Angel lights will help protect the lives of those who protect others.
