Miami County’s Syringe-Disposal Initiative Wins Award

14 Mar Miami County’s Syringe-Disposal Initiative Wins Award

Prosperity Indiana, an association for community economic development, awarded Miami County’s “Prevent Pricks with ShipHappens” initiative with The Key Award for Supportive Services Program of the Year; this award honors excellence and innovation in a service-oriented community initiative.

Prevent Pricks launched a syringe-disposal program that installed a “sharps kiosk” (pictured above). Any syringe using residents—including people with chronic diseases, those needing hormone or vitamin injections, and people who use drugs—can safely dispose of needles into the kiosk, which has collected over a half ton of syringes! The Peru Police Department, which is located in Miami County, has seen a 29% decrease in improper syringe disposal calls since the launch of this program. The Prevent Pricks organizers have installed two additional kiosks since the first installation in October 2020.

Prevent Pricks with ShipHappens was funded in part by a grant from the Miami County Community Foundation.
