Knox High School Applied Skills Class Hosts Inclusive Ugly Sweater Party with Community Foundation Support

The Knox High School Applied Skills Class brought students together for its annual Ugly Sweater Party, a festive and inclusive holiday celebration made possible in part by a $1,000 grant from the Starke County Community Foundation.

The event welcomed middle and high school students with special needs from LaVille, Plymouth, Argos, Rochester, Winamac, and Bremen. The celebration featured dancing, games, contests, food, and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Students in the Applied Skills Class played an active role in planning, decorating, and hosting the event, building social, communication, and leadership skills through hands-on experience. The project emphasized independence, responsibility, and teamwork while creating a welcoming environment for students of all abilities.

Grant funds supported key elements of the event, including lunch catered by the Culinary Arts program, decorations created by the Graphic Arts department, and supplies for student goodie bags. Cross-department collaboration with Graphic Arts, Culinary Arts, and Student Council strengthened school-wide engagement and highlighted student leadership.

The Ugly Sweater Party strengthened relationships among neighboring schools and communities while promoting inclusion, understanding, and acceptance. By showcasing the abilities of students with special needs, the event reinforced the importance of inclusive practices and community connection.
