12 May Honoring the Legacy of Brent Blacketor
The Fulton County Community Foundation recently presented commemorative plaques to the Rochester Girls Softball League and the Fulton County Soccer Association at the Brent Blacketor Memorial Sports Complex. The plaques, which will be displayed near each organization’s concession stand, celebrate the lasting legacy of Brent Blacketor and the extraordinary generosity of his mother, Mabel Blacketor.
Pictured during the presentation are several local softball and soccer players alongside FCCF Director of Development Brian Johnson, Michelle Maroney of the Fulton County Soccer Association Board, and Janell Mulligan of the Rochester Girls Softball League Board.
Brent Blacketor was a beloved young man, remembered for his warm spirit, outgoing nature, and genuine kindness to those around him. A proud student of Rochester High School, Brent was a dedicated three-sport athlete and an active member of multiple clubs and community organizations. After graduation, he attended the University of Arizona, where he pursued his dream of becoming a lawyer. Tragically, Brent’s life was cut short at just 19 years old in 1959, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew and loved him.
In honor of her son’s legacy, Mabel Blacketor devoted herself to serving the community they both cherished so deeply. Her generosity and vision led to the donation of twenty-five acres of land to create the Brent Blacketor Memorial Sports Complex. Today, the facility stands as a living tribute to Brent’s memory, serving the Rochester Girls Softball League and the Fulton County Soccer Association as a place where young athletes can grow and thrive, just as Brent once did.
Mabel’s philanthropic efforts extended far beyond this contribution. She also donated land for the expansion of Mill Creek Golf Course, where the entrance is named Brent Blacketor Drive; provided the first $5,000 to establish the Fulton County 4-H Fund; and made countless other gifts – many small and quietly given – that enriched her community.
But Mabel didn’t stop there. Even upon her passing in 2009 at the age of 93, Mabel continued her legacy of giving. The majority of her estate was left to the Northern Indiana Community Foundation, benefiting organizations such as Woodlawn Hospital, First Baptist Church, and establishing both a scholarship in Brent’s name and the Mabel Blacketor Memorial Operating Endowment Fund.
Today, her legacy continues to shape the community she loved so deeply.
Those who wish to honor the Blacketor family’s enduring impact may make a gift to support the Brent Blacketor Memorial Sports Complex here.
